Bookmark import from Chrome does not find all bookmarks, can I do this manually?

In Chrome I created an HTML file to export my bookmarks to Firefox. In Firefox there is an option to import bookmarks automatically from Chrome. I clicked this option and not all of my Chrome Bookmarks were found/imported. Can I manually import from the HTML file or is there another workaround?

Yes, you can import bookmarks from an HTML file into Firefox. See Import Bookmarks from an HTML file for more information.

Hope this helps.

That link relates to a JSON formatted file, not Chrome ones. I tried this option before in error and it didn't work.

You should be able to import a bookmarks HTML backup in the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Show All Bookmarks).

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Import Bookmarks from HTML

Confused! Its turns out the Chrome import did work but it seemed to reorganise the bookmarks so I couldn't recognise them. That earlier attempt at importing HMTL must have worked too, even though the message said it didn't. Then, most recently, I imported again! So now I have multiple copies of my bookmarks! What a mess!

You can restore an older automatically created compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backup and give it another try.

The number of bookmarks in each backup should indicate whether they have the Chrome bookmarks.

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Thanks, but I think I'll leave as is or to another time.

Hi scottydingo, possibly the ones you imported from the HTML file are all together in a single "Imported Bookmarks" folder at the bottom of the Bookmarks Menu. If so, at least those should be easy to delete in one step. Not sure about the ones imported from Chrome.
