Thunderbird is unbearably slow. Are there ways to remedy this?

Opening Thunderbird takes several minutes and there is no indication that it is even opening. Opening inboxes for any of several email accounts I have takes a very long time. It seems that Thunderbird is getting slower and slower as time goes on. It just hangs on many operations. Bringing the Thunderbird window to the front takes several minutes. No other apps are like this on my PC.
