I have to reset my setting every time I start Thunderbird. The setting that seems to be systematically lost is the "mark messages as read on display." Incoming messages are not always in boldface so I don't realize I have new messages!! How can I fix these things. I am using a PC with Windows 10.

Lost exactly how?

There is the legitimate issue that when some mail servers download mail to mobile devices like phones they mark mail as read on the server at that time if the protocol used in POP. Others use IMAP and everything done on the other device is synchronized to the Thunderbird account via IMAP so mail read on other devices and marked as read via that process comes into Thunderbird as read.

You say the issue is only when you start Thunderbird. Is that because once you are on Thunderbird new mail arrives unread because you have not already looked at it on your phone?
