About 14 days ago I noticed that when a web page loads the phone number of the organisation comes up and then disappears in about 5 seconds. After that there is no phone number - although fax numbers still appear.

I think that the phone numbers are in a skype formated box and it is the skype box that is disappearing. How do I fix it?

Known to be caused by the Skype extension for Firefox - disable it.
