It seems like something is overlapping.

Also, every time my cursor moves along the menu or the bookmarks, it seems to highlight everything that I pass by... maybe overlap of some sort as well?

Depends on who you ask if that is normal. You don't have to put up with it, if you don't want it that way, as Firefox is customizable.

You can make Firefox 4.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)

That's not really what I meant. I was referring to the inability for me to see the tabs clearly... I actually love having the tabs up there because my netbook screen is so tiny.
