The easiest way (without any need for a Extension like above) is to put the Homepage toolbar button on a toolbar (with Customize window open) and then "Middle-Click" the Homepage button as it will then open a new tab with your homepage.

However since you are using a Mac, if it is a laptop and not using a mouse then try "Cmd+left-click".
