Firefox 10 is the latest version, it was released on January 31, 2012. Where are these messages being displayed?

Change your homepage - How to set the homepage

This - http://www.google.com/firefox - is the old Firefox Start Page used by the Firefox 3.6 and earlier versions of Firefox. I think that Google assumes that you are using an older version of Firefox, as they hard-coded that "upgrade" message into that page - all versions of Firefox see that message.

Starting with the Firefox 4 version, Firefox is using a "local" Start Page with the address of about:home. It looks similar to the old Start Page, but it isn't exactly the same.
