When I type a subject into the main search box and hit search nothing happens, I have to cut and paste it into the search box on the address bar. I am running Mac osx lion and Firefox 10.

Try to delete the search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder

Try to reset some preferences to the default with the SearchReset extension:

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
