I'm running Firefox 26 and a modified version of Ubuntu 12.04. Whenever I download something and click on it in the top right download menu, the item is opened with the text editor gedit. If the file is not of a text nature (usually the case) it freezes gedit and is a pain to close. How can I prevent this?

Hi Advocate, You can reset the open with dialogue you can Change what Firefox does when you download

  1. Go to Firefox Options/Preferences
  2. Select the Applications menu
  3. From here you can change the application that opens up for specific document types

Please respond to this thread if you have any other questions about this.

Try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
