I recently downloaded some Firefox update; has it subjected me to the occasional intrusive music or audio ads that I am now hearing?-- including an ad for an Asian women's facial cream from Clarins?

From where did you get the update? You should get Firefox only from the source: Mozilla. Does this problem happen in Firefox safe mode? If not, check your extensions to make sure that you have not had something unwanted dumped on you. It would not hurt to do a malware check also.
