I have Firefox configured to "Use system proxy settings". Problem is that when system proxy settings change it takes Firefox, and it seems only Firefox, ages (if ever, most of the time I have to restart the browser) to get proxy settings refreshed.

Typical scenario is when I come to work from home and vice versa. At home non-proxied wifi, at work wired and wifi connection both requiring proxy. Wired one has "Automatic Proxy Configuration" URL preconfigured. Unfortunately on MAC wifi proxy settings are tied to wifi interface card (not to the wifi network) so I have to manually add (when coming to work) or remove (when returning back home) "Automatic Proxy Configuration" URL for wifi. While in clam shell mode, I plug in wired connection, wifi is on, login, change proxy settings for wifi - Firefox that remained open does not see the new network settings and any tab fails to reload or open new URLs (proxy cannot be found).

Can Firefox be more tightly integrated with OS, to be notified of these proxy settings change event and flush cached system proxy settings it resolved before the change?

Firefox 35.0.1 Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

This I do not know. However it is possible to use an add on to switch proxies quickly: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../?src=search

Or even saved network preferences in two different profiles, though this might be more complicated than it needs to be. Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles
