I am a technician and have a question about Firefox

I had a customer today that mainly uses Firefox for emails and such. The system runs fine and is very fast and newer so i know its not the hardware. Whenever we would open Firefox it would make the hard drive utilize 100% and nearly puts the system to a halt. We have uninstalled all addons and have wiped out all data from Firefox then reinstalled. We got it to open and run fine but when you would click anything like settings it would do the same thing. When we kill the process it stops acting sporadic. What is causing this issue and what can we do to fix it without wiping the system clean and perhaps run into the same issue again. Also the system is not infected and runs fine unless you open Firefox. Other browsers work just fine.

Can you provide any further info about the laptop? Make, model, operating system, hardware, age, etc?

I've not heard of Firefox using the hard drive in the way you describe, but will see what I can find out.

The system is an Acer mini desktop with a core i3 and 4gb ram and windows 7 home premium. Thats about all the info i have on it. We would open firefox then the system would nearly lock up. Now if we opened it and let it sit at the main homepage it will run fine, unless we click something or change the default homepage, if we could get to that point.

Did the user get Firefox from a trusted site?

I trust you checked for mal-ware.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?


In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.


Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.
