My toolbars and the download button do not respond when clicked

Since upgrading to FF36, my menu bar does not respond when clicked. So I have no access to bookmarks or tools or the file menu. Most of the buttons on the right hand side of the screen also do not work when clicked except the home button. I filed a bug report almost 2 weeks ago with no response.

Hello dadave12, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

I've done all that plus refreshed FF down to bare bones. The problem happened when FF upgraded to 36 and it won't go away.

Thanks-I tried that and FF worked normally. Not sure what to do now. I thought it might be graphics related since pull down menus in Office are not working either (I can arrow down blindly though and changed things that way) so I updated my graphics card driver. This did not help.

What's weird though is Chrome and Explorer do not have this problem. Bookmarks and everything else works the way it is supposed to.

Try to disable your security temporarily to see if that helps.

If you use a non standard windows theme or made other appearance changes then try to revert those changes and use a (different) standard theme or Windows wallpaper.

  • Control Panel > Personalization > Theme & Window Color and Appearance

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons. Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is detective.

Funny thing-when I run Firefox sandboxed through my Comodo Antivirus software-it works perfectly. When I don't, it does the same things I mentioned above...

So no one has any more ideas? Mozilla just gives up on its users? This is very disappointing as I like FF very much but no one has any original ideas that could help me fix the problem. I've tried all the normal stuff mentioned above and it didn't work. I've upgraded to the latest version and the problem remains. I can no longer run FF sandboxed in my antivirus program-it locks up Comodo now.

I have disabled all the add-ons and refreshed FF as well-nothing works. The problem remains. I have even deleted all Mozilla files from the program files after uninstalling FF and then re-installed it; and still the problem remains. I think it's a graphics issue since some of the buttons still work on the interface-and yes I updated all the drivers that have to do with graphics.
