How do I get Firefox 38.0.1 to remember just a username?

After updating to FF 38.0.1 i notice that my usernames are not saved, I always reject the saving option for passwords by clicking the "never" option when it presents itself.

Is there a way to select a permanent saving and filling-in of my usernames?

(Shortcut addresses to the new preferences for that purpose would be helpful also.

Many thanks

Hello joypebble

type(or copy paste) in the location/address bar the next about:preferences#privacy and be sure you don't have selected the Never Remember History in History area

Now do the same with the about:preferences#security and select the Remember passwords for sites, close the tabs and restart firefox.

thank you

Thanks for the swift response. Both suggested addresses about:preferences#privacy and about:preferences#security already display your suggested settings. The pull-down menus don't respond for some reason. (The menus do not change when the arrows are clicked-on.)

Again, I do not want to automatically fill in any passwords. I do want FF to remember and automatically paste the usernames on most sites I visit but it doesn't remember nor paste usernames even though I am showing your settings.

Nothing is "alive" on either of those pages.

FF did all this for me before the last update.

I'm not sure what's wrong.

Thanks, again

You need to disable the Password Manager and use saved form data if you only want to save the user name.

As I mentioned, the "Preferences page, when it appears, has no moving parts.

It's a frozen screen. Nothing is selectable. Going to preferences via the Firefox menu produces the condition described above. Going to either about:preferences#privacy or about:preferences#security produces the same dead panes with no moving available options.

I am effectively locked out of access to my preferences.

Everything I have described here is true in my MacBook Pro as well and my iMac desktop. Both are running FF 38.0.1

I'm really in need of the username entry feature on an hourly basis. Can we fix this?

If this is a bug and you are working on it, kindly let me know and i'll hang in there.

If that's not the case, then I'll need to move to another system even though Firefox is my primary web interface.

Many thanks

You can toggle browser.preferences.inContent to false on the about:config page to restore the standalone Options/Preferences window that you had in previous Firefox versions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
