I got an email telling me that someone tried to access my Google account, so I changed my Google password right away, but now I am not able to sign in to my Gmail account. I also have the same Gmail account on my Droid phone and I after entering the new password I have no trouble signing in to Gmail. Something must be identifying my desktop as not being authorized to use my Gmail account.

you sure that email was not you trying to set up Thunderbird. The thing is you changed your password, probably opted in for the two factor authentication and have not opted in for an application password for Thunderbird.
