I leave messages in my inbox and after an unknown period of time some of the messages become unreadable.
I am not sure exactly what is happening, but I am thinking that the messages are turning into computer code. This only happens with items left in the inbox and not separate folders. It also does not happen to every email that is in the inbox at that time.

Can you provide an example of or a description of the "computer code"?
There is a possibility that your Inbox file or its index, Inbox.msf, is corrupt or they are out of synch, and rebuilding the folder may fix it. Unfortunately, rebuilding it may also lose some or all of the contents.
Do you allow it to compact? Do you have a large number of messages in the Inbox?
I hate stuff languishing in my Inbox. If it's in there, I haven't read it yet. So I read it and file it accordingly. Pragmatically, if any folder is going to be corrupted, it will be the Inbox, so that provides me further incentive not to let things accumulate in there.
Of course, ideally, you can put or leave as many messages as you want anywhere you want. Practically, I find it works better if I move things away from the Inbox asap.

It looks to me like HTML code but unsure. Unfortunately, I don't have a screen shot that I can provide at this time. The odd thing is that I don't have many items in the inbox and I compact when it asks me to. Also, it doesn't affect every item in the inbox when it does it.
