After installing 38.7 on XP I find Thunderbird will not start from shortcuts on the desktop or quick launch bar - I just get a Windows Stop sound.

Upgraded from 38.5. I have tried re-installing 38.5 and that works fine, but automatic or deliberate upgrades to 38.7 consistently result in the problem described. So I have to revert to 38.5 again and again. I have now switched off automatic upgrades.

yep, this might be the last of Thunderbird for XP... and possibly vista. Certainly without updating to SP3.

See Bug 1240511 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1240511

In this case you might try safe mode (Hold shift while you start Thunderbird) you might also check your firewall. Some of them Block every new version of Thunderbird. The Norton product is particularly bad for it.

FWIW, normally Thunderbird follows Firefox's lead, and I'm not aware of any Firefox plans to stop shipping for XP any time soon.

I'll try that. Thanks.
