after update to version 59.0.2 all bookmarks are suddenly gone and cannot be restored
Also all history is also gone.
I tried restoring bookmarks from the automatic Firefox backups but Firefox says it cannot handle the safety copy. Then I tried to convert one backup to html, it looks OK in Firefox, but restoring bookmarks from the html file does not work either. Any ideas what to do nest - has it really to be this difficult??

If there is no folder on your Desktop called OldFirefoxProfile then Ya they are gone, but if you can see them you can start them again.

Sorry to hear that. Just in case a file is locked, it might help to shut down Windows and start it up again.
Have you seen the error mentioned in this article: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message. The steps suggested there might be necessary if bookmarking is broken.
