Trying to save a backup file of bookmarks from 'Show all bookmarks' Library window, nothing is saved.

Also trying to save a copy of bookmarks as an 'html' file also fails with no output.

I'm using the latest versions of macOS 10.13.4, Firefox 59.0.2.

Please explain the problem in detail. What happens? Error messages?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I updated Flash then started in Safe mode.

No change. Still no '.json' or '.html' files are created.

After clicking on 'save' button, display returns immediately to the 'Library panel showing all bookmarks.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

I updated to 59.0.3 as suggested from 59.0.2. Then deleted the 3 'places' files and restarted but no change - neither 'json' file nor 'html' options worked.

I reloaded a recent json back-up to see if something had been corrupted but again nothing. I used the 'verify' option before and after deleting the 'places files and got the following:

> Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to check database integrity > Task: invalidateCaches - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Hopes this helps.

Suggestions, please, on what I should do to sort out the problem shown up by the 'verify' command?

Did you try to rename/remove all places.sqlite files like I wrote above?

I deleted the three places files but no change.

I created a second administrator account as suggested in the Apple Toolbox article. Firefox then happily produced a back-up file so this suggests there is a problem in the main admin/user account.

Will re-installing macOS fix it?
