Firefox v52.7.3 ESR Windows7 x64

Hello,

All Youtube videos just hang with a turning circle. A message says if the video doesn't play shortly try restarting my device (loosely quoted.) Youtube works in new Firefox profiles but my profile is highly customized and I have 3 other files based on it. So I'd really like to get it working.

I've tried: Starting firefox in Safemode Turning Flash player on and off Turning Html5 on and off Turing Hardware acceleration off Turning off adblockers Disabling UserChrome and UserContent

My feeling is that it is something I did in about:config. Are there any options there that would not allow Youtube to load?

I'd be grateful for any help.

I FIXED IT!

In about:config media.autoplay.enabled should be set to FALSE, not true.

This also breaks other video sites like Netflix and Vimeo. See bug report here. It is still being worked on. It is a shame because I really hate stuff playing the background without my consent, particularly advertisements (which ad blockers don't always catch.)

I also expect videos to wait before playing when I open them in a New tab (background tab.) But I have an Addon for that: Magic Actions For Youtube. It also does a lot more.

I did read those help articles and also through this forum. No solution found.

(Sorry if my first post was unclear. The forum changed my formatting.)

Update: media.block-autoplay-until-in-foreground = TRUE seems to work pretty well for opening Youtube videos in a background tab. It pauses playback until you click the tab. According to this thread, though, it only works until Firefox 57. It will break videos with Firefox 57.

Yet another reason to stick with older versions.

The default for media.autoplay.enabled is true as manually setting it to false will block playback on html5.
