When downloading a file I always have to open it from the browser, unless it will appear as damaged. For example, after downloading a document "Study.doc" and NOT opening it from Firefox I always have two files in the Downloads folder — "Study.doc" which size is 0 kb and "Study.doc.part" which is exactly the size of the document. Therefore I cannot move it without first opening it even if I don't want to.

It is possible that (anti-virus) security software is causing the problem and prevents Firefox from renaming and moving the file. Try to disable security software temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

Hi west2best, glad to see you on Mozilla Support Forum.

I am not confirmed yet that you have problem with that particular file or all files.

Method 1:-

You can try refreshing the browser:-

  • Click the menu icon, then click on “Help”. Click on Firefox's main menu button, represented by three horizontal lines.
  • Click “Troubleshooting Information”.
  • Click on “Refresh Firefox”.
  • Confirm.
  • Click “Finish”.

Method 2:-

You can rename the file and remove .part extension from it (but this will be temporary solution.)

If it doesn't work, then feel free to ask in Reply Section. Thanks for raising your question in Mozilla Support Forum.

Hi west2best, Firefox uses a .part file while it is downloading and then, once it completes the download, it should clean up the name. I don't know why that last step is not happening.

Does it matter where you tell Firefox to save the file (if you are using Save rather than Open)?
