Initial startup time is several times longer after update.
After the recent update to version 89, FF has gone from 1-2 seconds load time to around 20 seconds, just for the initial load from clicking the icon. The only new things I have done to it since the update was reverting the tabs (disable proton) and setting the menu spacing down to 2px.

I had this problem too.
From several options that were available to begin trying to get back old functionality I picked this as being the easiest to implement: "Here are the steps to switch the temporary preference between the Firefox 57-88 ("Photon") appearance and the Firefox 89 ("Proton") appearance:
In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk. In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.proton.enabled and pause while the list is filtered. Double-click the preference to switch the value between true (Proton style) and false (Photon style)."
That comes from about two-thirds of the way down on this page [https://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html#me...]
I made the change, restarted Firefox and have regained the speed in loading pages in new tabs that I previously had and loved. Next I want to find an easy solution to eliminate all the added space in the menu for creating a bookmark. Who needs that huge thumbnail at the top? I know what I'm bookmarking!
Setting the browser.proton.enabled value from true to false was the very First thing I did with this new update actually. To restore the darker theme of the tabs I had from the previous version. The second was creating a chromeuser.css file and changing the px size to 2 for the menu spacing. Those two things are the Only things I have done.
