When I typed searches into my address bar results from google would appear, somehow I managed to change it so that now when I type anything into the address bar (that isn't a proper website address) search results from ask.com appear. How can I change it back so that google is the default search engine again?

  1. Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
  2. Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
  3. Locate the preference keyword.URL, then right-click on it and choose Reset

It is likely to have changed other settings, for details see this forum post - http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=5069645#p5069645

Not related to your question, but you are using an old unsupported version of Firefox which will have known security holes. You should consider upgrading.
