Firefox keeps opening at the last visited site; even though the option for the home page are set to open at google/firefox. I have changed the option also to blank page but still the same results.

Press CTRL+SHIFT+DEL, change the setting at the drop down menu to "Everything", checkmark the box called "Cache" (uncheck the others) and then click the "Clear Now" button. It may take a couple of minutes to clear, so be patient.

Also, go to Tools | Options | Privacy and click the "Show Cookies" button. Find the site which keeps appearing, click it to highlight it and then click Remove Cookies.

Is it always the same site, or do they differ?

Make sure that you close Firefox properly to prevent session restore from restoring the previous session automatically.

See "Hang at exit":

Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
