I want my bookmarks back as a permanent toolbar to the left of my screen. How do I restore it to its familar place? The new system of placing it on the right in a drop down menu is significantly slower and infinitely more annoying to me that having it placed as it has been customarily.

I have looked in every options menu that seems relevant and can find nothing that allows me to restore it to its place before Firefox 4.

You can open the bookmarks in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > Bookmarks (Ctrl+B)

Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

You can find toolbar buttons to open the bookmarks and the history in the sidebar in the toolbar palette and drag them on a toolbar. You need the bookmarks (star) button without the drop marker.

Open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
