I have tried upgrading to Firefox 4.0.1 several times and every time in hangs when it gets to the stop "checking add-on compatibility". I ended up reinstalling 3.6.17. I have removed almost all of the add-ons except java console 6.0.23, java quick starter 1.0, McAfee siteadvisor 3.3.1, Microsoft Net Framework assistant 0.0.0, and Movie Media Player 7. There is a list of plug-in too numerous to mention.

Try to disable Movie Media Player, that is the only extension that requires update via internet. The others can't be updated via Firefox because they are installed by other software.

Tried it. It didn't work. Just let me know when Firefox 4 is really ready for prime time. In the mean time I will run 3.6.17, based on some of the comments I have read it might be better anyway.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
