Is there a way to expand the number of sites that appear in the location bar history?

I'd like to see more recently visited sites in the location bar history, can you do that?

You can do that by changing a hidden preference.

Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
Locate the preference browser.urlbar.maxRichResults, double-click on it and change its value to the number of results you want to appear

While I'm at it, can I change it so the whole list shows without a "scrollbar" (not sure of the word?)?
