When I try and put the firefox icon into my applications folder. this pops up- 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.' What do I do?

This has happened with the last 3 NEW Firefox's over the past couple of years. I have not been able to update because it keeps saying 'The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.' whenever I try and add the icon to my apps folder.

I am running Mac 10.5.8

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
