Is there any way I can get firefox for android by downloading the apk to my win xp machine, without going to the android market, which seems to be the only link? I have this cheap pandigital android tablet that doesn't connect with android market, but I'd still like to try installing the apk. So far it looks like you can only get it at android market. However, since firefox is free, and not full of viruses, etc, I don't see any reason to restrict it to the android market only.

You can get Firefox from the ftp if you cannot access the market. You will need to download updates maually.

You can try it but as you mentioned cheap "pandigital" tablet I would not be surprised it is one of the pandigital models that uses a older ARMv6 cpu when ARMv7 is required. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android

What model and version is it? as I or somebody else may be able to hunt down what specs it has.
