Security is set to "Remember passwords" and Privacy settings do NOT clear passwords. When I go to log in on a site the "Remember Password" bubble appears but does nothing when I click on "Remember password". It hangs around for a few seconds then disappears. When I return to the same site Firefox does not enter my username and password but asks again if I want it to remember the password.

If starting in Safe mode doesn't fix it then try this:

It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

Does this happen on all sites or just a few? Some sites disable password saving. More info here - Usernames and passwords are not saved

This happens on all sites - including this one! lol

It looks like you have some preference that have been changed from their default state that could be interfering here. I think you should try the steps in the Basic Troubleshooting guide starting with Step 4 - Restart in Safe Mode.

I have renamed the files as directed and when I signed in on this site the "Remember Password" bubble disappeared when I clicked on "Remember" so things are looking good! Many thanks.
