OK just built a new pc and reinstalled firefox, everything seems to work fine except youtube where most of the vids show as black squares with no control bar etc. the videos also seem to be in HTML5 instead of flash.

Thnx done that already, Also seems i have found the problem. Upon reinstalling i had somehow been entered into the HTML5 trial which appears to be bugged or not working in some way. Left the trial probably as you were typing that and now all seems to be working at least for now.
