I downloaded and installed the add-on "self-destructing cookies" the first computer I put it on it went perfectly. The second computer the icon didn't appear. I checked to customize the toolbar just in case I wasn't seeing it. I removed it and reinstalled it 3 times, I restarted the browser. none of this works. both computers are exactly the same. the notices for self-destructing cookies comes up but not the icon. I am running the latest version of firefox also. thank you for any help

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • if missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup

You can check for problems caused by a corrupted localstore.rdf file.

I also deleted the localstore.rdf file like the help link said, that didn't help I completely reset firefox and that worked, until this morning when the icon just disappeared. it is still throwing the notification messages up just no icon help please?

I have the same problem. The icon keeps moving to the add-on bar, (which I have disabled). I also have an issue with other icon placement. I put flexible spaces between icons as there can be an overlap or lack of space. The order of icons and spaces changes. I've tried a complete new install of Firefox and loading different add-ons combinations. The problem persists. I had no issues prior to Firefox 22.

Hi Moznewbie, your toolbar layout is stored in the localstore.rdf file (mentioned in an earlier post in this thread). That file should be stable between session of Firefox unless it has become corrupted. If you find that the toolbars are reset to default configurations, can you think of any "clean up" software that runs on a regular schedule which might be removing localstore.rdf?

Regarding the problem of overlapping toolbar controls, that doesn't sound familiar. Could you post a screen shot showing what it looks like? This article has tips on that: How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

I've used CCleaner and Advanced SystemCare for quite a few years. I've never had problems with them. I added Wise Care 365 about 9 months ago and that does cause minor glitches. Neither CC nor ASC are automated. I had WC365 set up to run at boot up. I have removed the fast boot option and added the c/documentsandsettings/myusername/applicationdata/mozilla/firefox/profile/longcode.default/localstore.rdf to the exclusion list to make sure. I haven't run any of these programs and the issue persists. This is how I have the screen set up:

If I reboot the PC and reload the page I get this, (top right):

http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/moznewbie/media/After_zps9ef9f49b.png.html

If I open up a 2nd Firefox browser the SDC icon moves to the add-on browser which now opens despite my having it un-ticked. I reload the page and get this:

http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/moznewbie/media/After2ndtab_zps7f569b20.png.html

(Ignore the screen times. I manually changed the after setting back to the before setting to show what the changes are rather than restart the process).

The overlapping/no space issue sentence was poorly worded. There are several icons such as the Adblock Plus and Download Helper icons that have an arrow to the far right of the icon when they are ready for use. Certain other icons start at the far left of their respective icon. It can be difficult to locate the arrows on some screens. They don't 'overlap' so much as become joined and difficult to locate - especially Download Helper. Thanks.

Addendum: I also have the Ghostery 5.0.3 add-on loaded. I didn't think it would be related to the problem but it does appear to be. Disabling Ghostery stops the SDC icon moving and stops the icon order from changing. It doesn't prevent the flexible spaces from moving. (Perhaps the icons are still moving?). I also tried disabling SDC and the Better Privacy add-ons. That had no effect. Nor did changing the SDC options.

I had the exact same problem. I accidentally discovered that it was because I had "Always use private browsing mode" checked. Unclicking that fixed the problem!

I'd never used the private function prior to this. I switched it on, moved the icon position, and then switched the private function off again. The icon moved back to the add-on bar. I still suspect that it's a combination of blocking software, (Ghostery, AdBlock Plus, and Better Privacy).
