It is my understanding that as I choose a new window for private browsing that the firefox tab for that window will be purple with mask icon. Currently when I choose new window for private browsing the firefox tab stays orange but includes a tab with mask icon that says private browsing but I am now confused if my browsing is private or regular.

Did I switch off some type of setting by accident?

Am i correct in assuming that if the firefox window tab is purple with mask icon that browsing will be private browsing?

Thank you.

This seems to be a "stealth" feature for users who automatically start Firefox in private browsing mode. In that case, all of the Firefox buttons are orange instead of being orange for regular and purple for private. At least, that's my understanding.

The presence of "browser.privatebrowsing.autostart: True" shows that you have started Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode and in that case you will not get the purple Firefox menu button.
