1) Screen dump shows folders as expected, but choosing one by clicking on it does not reveal messages 2) the other tabs (created from previous installation) show correct data 3) menu option help / troubleshooting works ok - output attached 4) other menu option do not work (e.g. "Help / About" does nothing) 5) I am running under a brand new installation of Linux Mint 17/ Cinnamon - have tried un-installing / re-installing 6) version installed is 1:31.6.0+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 7) ~/.thunderbird contains two profiles, dw6qkyib.New and q0vb0h3j.default. profiles.ini points to the latter

The problem seems to have been in using the old profile. Not only did it result in access to messages becoming impossibly slow, some of the meu options stopped working completely (e.g. Tools / Address Book, Help / About).

After a discussion on the Linux Mint support forum http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=195264&sid=b8b72a18e053f2f03dfe0e11cf21a59e I have created a new profile and solved the problem.

I think this is a "feature" that has been added in one of the new versions. I can get to see the messages if I click on a folder with the right mouse and select "Open in new tab". However, (in Classic view) selecting a message in the list does not show the body of the email in the bottom pane.

This, to me, is a broken version. The previous behaviour was completely intuitive: choose any folder in the LHS and this list of massages appeared in the top RH panel, click on any header from the list, and the details were shown below. Why did someone thing this paradigm needed to be changed?

I would rather go back to a previous version, if I knew when this change was made.

I think this is a "feature" ...

Certainly not. Something appears to be screwed in your profile.

After migration of profile

What does this mean? I'd suggest you try with a new profile.
