I am unable to move the complete Thunderbird profile from a Win 7 PC to Win 8.1 PC.

In the past years, I have used the same approach to successfully migrate Thunderbird profile from XP to Win 7 (two PCs), from Win 7 to Win 8.1 PC for my wife. We really like and appreciate Thunderbird over these many years. However, I need help on moving the profile to my Win 8.1.

I have on my Toshiba lap top Win 7 Home Premium. I want to move this Thunderbird Profile to my HP Pavilion 15 Notebook with Win 8.1. Both PCs have Thunderbird 38.7.0.

I have always used the Manually moving files method documented in: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer

1. On Win 8.1, I installed Thunderbird 38.7.0. Then restarted computer. 2. I pasted the contents of TB profile from Win 7. 3. I turned off Norton Security on Win 8.1 before starting Thunderbird.

I started Thunderbird on Win 8.1 with the following results: • The Address Book with All Addresses (about 400) were migrated. • All emails (139) were migrated. . • No user email folders were migrated. This is the only problem that I know of. I could send and receive emails from my Win 8.1 to my other computers. • I have tried the above procedure multiple times with the same result.

The volume of data in Thunderbird Profile is: 435 MB total, 804 files, 87 folders. Does the size of the Profile affect the migration to another PC?

What do I need to do to make this migration to Win 8.1 on my HP Notebook?

Thanks much, Ken

I don't have a lot of experience with Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 but I am led to believe that W10 is largely a cosmetic makeover of 8.1. (I think they are all horribly ugly.)

When I moved a Thunderbird profile over to new installation of Windows 10, it appeared to copy my profile but announced success alarmingly quickly. I found it had copied only the top layer of folders. It took another two attempts before it actually copied all the nested folders over.

IMHO the W10 file copying utility is broken. Maybe the fault harks back to W8. If you're comfortable with the command line, maybe robocopy will do a better job of it.

Thank you for your reply. I will check the amount of data that gets pasted as I have not done that. I will have to come up to speed on doing robo copy. Is there a technique to use so that one does not have to key the whole string of the command since it is lengthy and complex? Thanks much, Ken
