I updated to 50.0 on my up to date windows 7 pro based computer. I immediately started seeing areas of badly rendered graphics in web pages. Kind of a 1x3 inch rectangle of old but scrambled frame buffer data (or sometimes all black or all white). It moved and changed as the page was scrolled.

I reloaded 49.0 and the problem went away.

Hi, try turning off hardware acceleration as shown here: Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you!

Going back to 50.0. the problem returned. Then, turning off hardware acceleration as suggested, made it go away.

Is this seen as a bug? Have others had issues? I don't want to have to turn off hardware acceleration permanently.

Hi, not really seen as a bug - it's a fairly common occurrence. Updating your graphics drivers might fix it - see linked article above.
