several weeks ago, i noticed that my tabs that i have had open for months no longer were present when i had occasion to reopen firefox after i had shutdown computer. i think it happened after update 98.0.2 was installed. i have searched help, etc. one solution that was my exact problem did not apply to me because the screenshots the contributor was using were not present on my version of the browser (or it is always possible that i was lost). this issue is a pain and i sure would appreciate any help thanks, Steve

for a day or so, this issue seems to have gone away. just as in the past, the tabs are there ready to use when i close firefox and reopen. maybe it was a "glitch" which is the most famous term in computerese.
I am going to mark this as solved and hope for the best. if the issue shows back again, I will start the search for fix again. thanks

to add to my problem description, i have the option "open previous windows and tabs selected in settings, general, start up. I am not describing a crashed browser or computer, just when i normally close computer and then come back to internet using firefox, i find my tabs closed and one tab (the home page) open. i will be glad to add to my description if it would be helpful
You can try to restore the session stored in upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page (Root directory).
- Help -> More Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Folder/Directory:
Windows: Open Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data
You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:
- previous.jsonlz4 (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.jsonlz4 from previous session that was loaded successfully)
- recovery.jsonlz4 (latest version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
- recovery.baklz4 (previous version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
- upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)
You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to replace the current file with Firefox closed.
- make sure to backup the current sessionstore.jsonlz4
You can look at this tool to inspect a compressed sessionstore file.
