I have two gmail accounts, both working perfectly for years. Lets call them A1 and A2. last week A1 all of a sudden stopped working. Google asked me password and second pass verification. But when trying to connect to google again a message "authentication error" arrived.

I then disinstalled TB and downloaded it anew. A2 started working immediately, but when trying to redefine A1 the above message "Unable to login..." appeared. I then tried to define A1 on the TB of the laptop of my girlfriend. There it started working without any problems. Both PC's have the same TB version and are working under Windows 10 with the same version. Seems to me very strange.

Any ideas?

Well if you discount the uninstall reinstall step which does absolutely nothing but waste the time and effort to do it. Then we discount attempts to reinstall the same account what are likewise almost always a total waste of time we are left with, you are saying is you are having a connectivity issue with a single gmail account.

So what is the actual error message, not an abbreviation or your interpretation. The message from the server verbatim please.

Some things to check.

  • IMAP and POP mail account use different ports. IS the working account that the non working one different with regard to IMAP and POP?
  • Have you tried restarting Thunderbird in troubleshoot mode (it is on the help menu) and continuing to see if that make things better?
  • Have you tried using you computer in safe mode with networking to see if there is a third party program running on your computer causing issues.
  • Have you tried deleting all saved passwords for the account is setting to make sure Thunderbird is not using an old one for some reason.
  • Is the account configured to use oauth2.0 authentication as required by Google?

Hello Matt,

Thanks a lot for your reply. It did however unfortunately not solve the problem.

The message I received from Google (in German) is this:

"Anmeldung auf demServer fehlgeschlagen. Eventuell sind Konfiguration, Benutzername oder Passwort nicht korrekt"

Both accounts are IMAP. They have authorisation to Thunderbird. Two factor authentication is disabled I tried troubleshoot mode. With this rather than displaying the above message, it endlessly is "checking password". I've tried computer safe mode: no results. All passwords are deleted. oauth2.0 is configured.

TB 102.11.0 (64Bit) Windows 10, version 22H2

And still the account works perfectly on the TB of my partners PC, with the exact same TB and Windows configuration.

I'm at a total loss.

Are you using imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, not imap.googlemail.com? Using a VPN or an interfering antivirus?

Hi sfhowes,

Thanks for your ideas. I've tried immediately with imap.googlemail.com anf smtp.googlemail.com. Same result.

I'm not using a VPN.

I had already tried without my antivirus (Kaspersky), to no avail. Beside, as had already explained, on my partners PC everything is working fine, and she is using the very same antivirus.

Thanks anyway!
