I download the most recent version of firefox, but the older version keeps coming up, not the newer version.

I have an iMac. I use firefox/google (downloaded 3.18.11). I was advised on the site that a new version of firefox was available, so I downloaded the newer version (9.8.11) When I bring up firefox/google, a prompt tells me I have a newer version already, but I don't. The print on the google site says a newer version is available.

I don't know where you're coming up with those version numbers, but you posted here with 3,6.22 which was released this past Tuesday 9/6 at the same time Firefox 6.0.2 was released. Those are the only two release versions of Firefox which are supported with security updates.
