I have always saved emails to client files but I noticed just recently that the email is being saved as a Type 15 and I can't open it.
In the past when I saved an email into a client file the icon looked like the thunderbird and all was well. Now I save an email and it looks like a fuzzy small thunderbird in a box. When I try to open it, a new screen opens up to compose an email and the saved email is attached to it. If I try to open the attachment as a thunderbird doc it shows all the commands, 50 lines of alphabet.. and somewhere in the midst is my message. it's frustrating. My save option types are: Main files, HTML files, Text files, or All files. I've tried saving all types and nothing works. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi Toad, Yes. This worked for me. I did not realize that I had to manually add ".eml" to the end of the subject line after I insert the date. I've never done that before. So my procedure is: right click, save as "mail file" add date and extension to file name, which defaults to subject line (re repairs.5.7.15.eml) and WooHoo!!! Done!! Thank you so mucy!!!

I think you mean Mail files (not Main), HTML files, Text files, or All files.
In Thunderbird Right click on email and choose 'Save As' then choose 'Mail Files(* .eml)'
Confirm the saved email in the Client file (not in Thunderbird), does it have a .eml extension?
You were correct, I meant "mail" files.
OMG!!! Todd you are a GENIUS!!! Your suggestion worked!!! Previously when I save my emails I had been going to the top left of screen and clicking "file" then save, etc.... NO MORE!!

It seems that my computer converted previously saved emails in that fashion as well. very strange. Is there anything else I should do? I guess I'm going to have to re-save all my emails unless you have another idea.
O.K. So I saved a few emails and went back to look in the client file to be certain it saved as a thunderbird type doc. It doesn't have "email" extension but that's fine with me. However, this method does not work if you modify the "name" of the document. (The name is the subject line.) I usually add the date at the end of the name such as 5.6.15 but the email won't save property if I add the date. So I've resolved to open client file, right click on email to change name and add date extension at that time.

As you are inserting the date using 'full stop/period number', but not adding the .eml at the end, it is possible that it cannot be saved because the last 'full stop/period number' cannot be interpreted as a file type extension.
Example: If the file name (Subject) of the email is: eg: London convention meeting.eml
and you want to add the date, then use either of these methods:
- London convention meeting.5.6.15.eml
- London convention meeting-5-6-15.eml
you can use either dots or dashes to separate the date part. Note that the .eml must be included after the date before you save.
This should mean that you do not have to manually alter the filename after saving.
