Unsorted Bookmarks folder not always default
At https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/create-bookmarks-save-your-favorite-webpages, it says,
To create a bookmark, click the star in the toolbar. The star will turn blue and a bookmark for the page you're on will be created in the Unsorted Bookmarks folder. That's it!
Yet for the longest time that I can remember (we're talking years), it has been the case that this is not always what happens. Sometimes it goes straight to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder, and yet sometimes it goes straight into the last folder that a bookmark was put into.
Why is this, and how do I get it to be consistent for once? It's driven me mad for far too long.

Bookmarks created by clicking a not highlighted star should always be created in the Unsorted folder.
Did you check your extensions (add-ons) to be sure that one of them isn't causing this issue?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
Hi, it's all down to how many times you click on the star: If you click on the star once, the bookmark will go into Unsorted Bookmarks. However if you wish the bookmark to go to a different destination, you should click on the star twice, then in the dialog box, use the upper, downward pointing arrow on the far right, to select a destination > Done.
If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

It's not an addon.
Like I said, this has happened consistently for at least 5 years now. I've had countless addons installed across multiple computers—both laptops and desktops—spanning both OS X and Windows, and I've used both the installable and portable version of Firefox as well. Yet it still happens.
Trust me; I'm pretty sure I'd have noticed by now if it were an addon. Lol.

That's exactly the thing, though. I only click it once and like 80%-90% of the time it goes to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder but the other fraction of the time it doesn't.
Are you sure that the page isn't already bookmarked in cases when this happens (i.e. the star is already highlighted)?
Quite sure. As I stated, it rarely happens. Almost always when I click on that icon, it goes straight to the Unsorted Bookmarks folder. But e~very now and then it doesn't. Instead, it may go to the Bookmarks Menu.
