how to delete Offers4U on a Mac without using dodgy AV tools?

Recently Firefox has become infected by a nasty piece of adware/malware called Offers4U, and I would very much like to get rid of it. But all the solutions I've seen use dodgy AV software. Surely someone must know where Offers4U puts its rubbish, so that it can simply be deleted?

The reason I don't want to use AV is that there isn't a single AV app that I've come across that isn't itself accused by someone of being malware. Everyone on the forums says Macs can take care of themselves, and don't need AV apps. But if that's true, there must be another way, surely?!

[Mac Mini, OS 10.9.5, Firefox 44.0.2]

Hi, you can try working through Remove Offers4U pop-up ads from Apple Mac OS X by Malware Tips.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Thanks. (Un!)fortunately I don't have any of those apps. I've looked through my Applications folder, and there's nothing there I don't recognise. I suppose that doesn't mean that some software I've installed has surreptitiously put stuff into Firefox though.

I haven't tried step 2 yet, because it looks as if it wants to uninstall all my add-ons, and that sounds pretty serious. And anyway, I didn't succeed with step 1.
