How to remove anchors from pasted text?

I'm trying to copy text with a fair amount of formatting (text & titles with different styles, bullet points, numbered lists, etc.) and pasted into the body of my Thunderbird message. For the most part, Thunderbird maintains the integrity of the style, but...it has also created anchors all of the text. In some cases, this is fine; I've got three footnotes, and I don't mind if they appear with anchors. But for the most part, I'd like to get rid of the anchors since they create havoc with the text.

I've tried going to Format->Remove Named Anchors ...but that hasn't been successful.

What else would you suggest?

Thanks!
