I am using the bookmarks sidebar with Firefox on Windows 11. Several times a week, the bookmarks toolbar will become unresponsive - Clicking on links or folders to open/close doesn't work. Closing and reopening the browser solves the problem. I can still click on links on web pages and open or close tabs, just the bookmarks sidebar becomes unresponsive.

I have literally no extensions installed in Firefox, just the default Facebook container. No themes other than the system theme either.

Any thoughts to resolve the issue?

Thanks!

Let's start with; If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Type https://accounts.firefox.com/settings<enter> in the address box. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

If any errors are reported: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional

The places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like they are corrupted.

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Locate the above files. Then rename or delete them. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.

Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.

. . . the bookmarks toolbar will become unresponsive

What were you doing at the time? surfing, watching a clip, reading something . . . .

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Maybe also check for issues with your Bitdefender Antivirus software.

I have tried all of the above - the bookmarks toolbar becomes unresponsive after leaving Firefox for another window. It works in the morning when I open it, but at some random point during the day, when I return, nothing I do with the bookmarks sidebar makes a difference. I can enter a URL, and that works fine. I haven't found any specific site or activity that is common when the sidebar becomes unresponsive. Perhaps a specific site left open...

No errors when verifying the integrity of the places database.

I don't see issues with Bitdefender - I had the same issue before switching from Norton last month.

If I close and then restore the bookmarks sidebar, it functions again. Also, closing the browser and reopening has the same effect.

Thanks for the suggestions!
