First click on external link opens home page, second click opens link, firefox is default browser mac osx intel.

This is caused by certain extensions that cause websites specified on the command line to not open. To figure out which extension it is, see Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
