Firefox 3.6.6 won't remember log-ins or passwords & EVERY TIME after I shut down & restart my computer I have to re-log in. In Toolsl - Options - Privacy I cannot get the box to "Remember History" -- it always reverts to "Use Custom Settings for History." And in Security - Remember Passwords for Sites I've selected the option "Remember passwords for sites" and have nothing in the "Exceptions" box. I do not have McAfee or Norton, so they could not be interfering with FF's refusal to allow "Remember History." (I see that I have a plugin called "*McAfee Clinic Activator Plugin (1,0,0,5)" -- I don't know what that is, how it got there, or whether that's relevant at all.) How do I resolve this?

Does Firefox offer to store passwords from websites that you visit? Do you see names and password in the Password Manager (Tools > Options > Security: Passwords: "Saved Passwords" > "Show Passwords") ?

  • The selection of websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
  • You must allow that cookie: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Exceptions"
  • Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"

The "exceptions" box is not the problem and I do not "clear recent history." Once again, can anyone advise HOW to keep "Remember History" as the default?

I can go into Tools > Options > Privacy > and click "Remember History" a hundred times and it will ALWAYS revert to "Use custom settings for history" NO MATTER WHAT I TRY TO DO.

Can somebody help? Does anybody at Firefox read these things?

It is not important if you see "Remember history" or "Use custom settings for history" .......... Only if all settings are the default then you will see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History". The "Use custom settings for history" setting reverts to "(Never) Remember history" if all History and Cookies settings are the default. So if you get "Use custom settings for history" then at least one of the History / Cookie settings in not the default.

You can look at these prefs on the about:config page. http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.history_expire_days (180) (also affects saved form data) http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.history_expire_days_min (90)

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
