The first tab in Firefox is constantly loading and cannot be closed, although I can open mail or change websites in it, I can't do anything from the menu bar in that window.

No matter what site the first Firefox tab is on, the icon in the tab shows a constant loading. I can use the tab moving through mail or going through a website. However, I cannot use any menu buttons for that tab. I've tried setting that window to blank, but when I open it auto loads the last site visited in that window.

I'm in version 3.6.12 Windows XP

I've been having this problem, but just checked my themes and noticed I had an outdated/unsupported theme enabled without realizing it. The theme didn't work at all.

I enabled the default theme (which is what I thought was enabled already,) and haven't had the tab freeze again yet...

I had the same problem. It looks like it's caused by the Aging Tabs ad-on. When I disabled it and restarted Firefox, the problem went away. Do others have the same add-on?
