Symantec should be releasing an update this week to make their add-ons work with Firefox 4.0.1 For details see http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Norton-product-compatibility-with-Firefox-Updates/m-p/443808
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

Hi
Thanks very much for your helpful suggestion above which I followed the link however I see it has re-installed version 4 for me which I do not want?
Where on my mac do I go to uninstall firefox 4.0?
thank you thank you Tony! his instrux were perfect, however I did go into Options-Advanced-Updates and uncheck Firefox updates. Then I went to Help-Check for Updates in my current window to see what it would update, so if you don't uncheck the Ffox updates under Options-Advanced, it WILL give you 4. firefox update again right away.
Thank you Tony, over and over. I've been struggling for weeks with this, when I hover over or clicked on my Toolbar menus, they would disappear and I couldn't access anything unless I clicked really fast and somehow clicked on the right one out of 20 or so. Reverted back according to your instructions and am so happy. Newer is not better.
