So miss spelled words in emails (outlook.com, hotmail) get underlined but as soon as I correct one all the red underlines go away. Only fix (beside learning to spell) is to turn spelling off and on for every word.

Hello,

That sounds odd. I've just tested on my end and I'm not getting the same problem. I suspect that means that there is a specific issue on your installation of Firefox.

Could you please try disabling all your add-ons (apart from the spell check dictionary) and then test again.

Disable or remove Add-ons

Do you still have the same issue? If not then I think one of your add-ons is causing the problem. Re-enable them one at a time and test to see which one is causing the problem.

If you do still have the same issue then I suggest doing a Firefox Reset. This will restore Firefox to its default settings. Your personal data (history, bookmarks etc) will be saved but you will need to reinstall your add-ons.

Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

I hope this helps. Let me know if not.
