Windows 7 computer with Firefox 29. After updating Firefox I wanted the tabs back at the bottom. I follow the instructions below but "browser.tabs.onTop" did not show up in the search. Is there another way to put the tabs back on the bottom???

How do I put tabs back on bottom like they used to be?

   In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
       The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
   In the Search field box at the top, type browser.tabs.onTop.
   Double-click the browser.tabs.onTop preference to set its value to false.

You can install this version of the Classic Theme Restorer for the current TenFourFox version that is based on Firefox 31 ESR release.

If you still have a TenFourFox version based upon Firefox 24 ESR then you do not need (can't use) the CTR extension.

For an unofficial Firefox 31 ESR compatible version that runs on a PowerPC Mac with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at TenFourFox.

  • You can check out the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.
  • You can find extra toolbar buttons and more toolbar settings in Customize (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize)

You can get squared Back and Forward buttons if you select small toolbar icons via the Customize window. The Firefox 31 release has this button at the bottom of the "3-bar" Firefox menu > Customize once you install the CTR extension.

Sorry, that preference applied to Firefox 28 and earlier versions.

Try this extension for that "retro" feature.

browser.tabs.onTop was removed in bug 755593. You can install either of the following add-ons.

I've made an edit to the following support article. It will be updated if an editor approves the changes.

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#TabsToolbar { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 100 !important;}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

For around 4 years now I have had to train and show many hundreds of people how to make forefox work properly with addon features like Tab mix plus and how to put there tabs below so they could improve there work productivity becouse they just didnt know any better way existed. With over a million people now having downloaded the new classic restore addon in order to get just ONE FEATURE "TABS BELOW" It defies logic that the Firefox Developers either dont know how to use a browser properly or dont care. They are sheep following Internet explorer and google down a black hole of stupidity. I use Firefox becouse its different and its able to work the way I like with TABS BELOW. Firefox 29 lasted aproximately 5 minutes before I went back to FF 28. I would happily use FF 29 but ONLY if tabs are below. This should not require an addon. Tabs below should be the standard and it would be the defining feature that makes firefox stand out. The inability to have tabs below is the very reason I Dont use other browsers. If a petition to get tabs below is made just how many signatures do we need to get the developers to listen. What does it take for the developers to listen to its users. I just dont get why this has gone down the path of becomming more and more like crome and internet explorer both of which I utterley hate becouse I cant put tabs below and organise things in the same way I have always been able to do in Firefox. Where has the difference gone. May as well rebadge as "crome clone" or "baby IE". Please listen to your users and fix this issue as some of us do know a better way and its TABS BELOW

Ya' know, the old adage of "if it ain't broke, then don't fix it" certainly should be adhered to by Mozilla.org concerning the Firefox browser!!!

I mean, if they are saying "hey, look at us, we have a new look and feel" and the millions of people that ACTUALLY USE firefox didn't ask for the changes, then DON'T FIX THE DAMN THING. OK, fix the bugs, fix any hacks, but if people aren't screaming about I hate the square looking tabs, THEN DON'T CHANGE IT!! The only thing I see right off the bat is that they made the tabs look more like tabs with "Ooooo look at the pretty nice and frilly rounded corners"....I say, SO WHAT??!!!!!!

Actually, with a few more changes and a few more things left out, hell, you might as well call it Firefox EXPLORER!!!!! There are TONS of things they've left out in the past 2 years that I'd give my right leg to get them back....but, obviously they've hired some out of work M$ people and now WE are getting what even Bill Gates doesn't want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I leave you with this small piece of advice "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, THEN STOP FIXING THE DAMN THING!!!"

PS - and that means give US more control

@ cor-el: didn't understand what you wrote. Can you give a step-by-step guide? (preferable for Mac OS X)

I looked into about:config If I want, that FF to open all tabs again, after craching, when I start it new, where do I have to set true/false. (Is "browser.sessionstore.restore.on.demand" the right line to look for?)

Thanks.

@the-edmeister and gingerbread man:

What is saver classictheme restorer or tabsonbottom add-on?

I ask, because I once tried both with version 31 (though I am using TenFourFox) and had the little buttons (on Mac: red = close, yellow = hide, green = maximaize) at the top left corner, cut a bit at the bottom I don't remember which one caused this). I also would like to have the tabs, not only on bottom, but the tabs not rounded and the last little thing (not as important) would be having the round "backwards" button, square.

The picture shows TenFourFox 24.7 with "Firefox3 theme for FF4 add-on" installed. (Mind there are to, one with version number 2, which is old and one with version number 4+. I guess it is this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/firefox-3-theme-for-firefox-1/ (Though it - the picture - is not exactly FF3-look-alike with the add on, mind the square buttons, I like it very much unfortunately I don't remember what I have done to get the buttons as they are now.)

Kacke,

A hyperlink to both of those extensions was posted here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/996959#answer-563370 You can read about what each of those extensions does in the "About" section of the download page.

As far as TenFourFox, that is a 3rd party version which isn't made by Mozilla. Best to get support from a forum for that browser, or over at MozillaZine Third Party/Unofficial Builds forum. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=42 Separate registration and login for MozillaZine is required. That forum is not part of Mozilla Support.

As far as particular's with 'tabs' goes, Classic Theme Restorer has a support thread over here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=2827985 As posted on the downloads page in the right-column under Support Site.

@ ED-meister: I know, but since it is the mozilla engine, shouldn't they react the same way, it is the same code just made comatible for PowerPC-Macs.

I tried classicthemerestorer again, which set the tabs on bottom and made them square, yay! (But it is to white, sompared to classic).

Look at these two pictures, shouldn't the first (cut buttons, red, yellow, green) and the second (buttons appear only, if you always move your mouse over them, after you have switched tabs (inlcuding coming back from setup menues etc.).

PS: is it possible you move my post to the appropriate thread?

Firefox versions for MacOSX are very different than the WIndows versions, which is what I am familiar with. I don't use 3rd party Gecko builds like TenFourFox, so I don't know how they might differ from the official versions that are made by Mozilla.

No, I can't move your posting over to a different forum. This forum is Support.Mozilla.Org You will need to create your own account at MozillaZine to be able to post in that forum.

cor-el

thanks a lot!

I have them small noww, but I can only find extra buttons, no square arrow buttons that would replace the small arrows with out boarders around it.

They look like picture 1 now, but I want them like in picture 2. and I want to have an option to make the grey darker (as in picture 2).

(oh man, scrolling does get weird slow).

I think that you would have to look for a theme that shows the toolbar buttons like you prefer. I'm on Linux and only see a border on toolbar button if I hover a button and not in the default state.

Thank you cor-el!

The cstbb gives me this (see picture "Bild 6").

No version of the buttons that include quare buttons of both farward and backwards being the same size. Also there are no additional Button icons (for the forward/back-button), to be chosen from the "customize" menue. One can only alter these particular buttons by going to cstbb -> settings and the only buttons that have the same size are coloured.

However I chose "29+ lunar silver" in cstbb, which made the arrows acceptable darker, at least. See picture "bild 7".
